About the Artist

The Bookish Artist - Lauren Kratz

My artwork links the world of Literature and Art. It is about the experience and memory of the Literature. I try to link a glimpse of a particular scene from literature to a visual memory of what would have been seen while reading the story. My style is impressionistic and imperfection is my preference.

All books used in my artwork have been damaged and would have otherwise been thrown away. I like to think that I'm giving each book one more adventure.

My book series takes the physical book and uses the pages to sculpt the story. The world of literature meets the world of art and is forever intermingled in a photograph.

Other pieces involve taking pages from literature and painting directly on the page to create the scene. My love of art and literature come together and complement each other.

Travel is another inspiration for my art. I have been on a journey that has taken me from the Netherlands to Germany, and beyond. I was a photojournalist for Eastern Mennonite Missions for a short term Go Assignment. I photographed the missionary families that are working in Europe; seeing how they are spreading the light around the globe.

I enjoy reading, a nice cup of tea, and time with my husband, cats, and dog.
